Tendonosis vs. Tendinitis

Tendonosis vs. Tendinitis

Tuesday tip ✅

It is incorrect to use the term “tendinitis” to describe a hypoechoic and thickened tendon on ultrasound. The ending “itis” implies inflammation, whereas the term “osis” means diseased. The accurate term for describing this disease process is tendinosis. There may be some inflammation present, but tendinosis is not an inflammatory process, it is degeneration of tendon tissue. This chronic condition can eventually lead to tendon tearing. It may cause pain and swelling, but not redness and warmth which occur in cases of inflammation.
